The most successful affiliate sites do far more than simply scraping content, they usually repackage the content in the form of reviews, how to's and buyers guides. Unique content has for a long time been key to building a good web presence. Also, the better performing affilaite websites do not actually look like affilate sites - as soon as someone realises that they are looking at an Amazon product, they generally head straight over to Amazon to make the deal.

Duplicated content has been an overrated issue lately. There is no way that Google can give a penalty for duplicated content, simply because there is too much of it already. Imagine song lyrics, sports scores, definitions, dictionaries, etc.
When starting an affiliate business it can be extremely difficult to create new content from a few lines of description that you received from the seller. Leaving the same descriptions is simply the easiest thing to do. But then you can enhance your site with at least as many pages that are original content. Write topic related articles, instructions, news flashes, etc to make the better part of your site unique and useful.
It is no wonder that affiliate sites do not get better organic placement than a parent site, because who is waiting for yet another affiliate of the same product?
