Google+ Explained and Why It’s Important

Maile Ohye of Google explains in this excellent video why Google+ is so important for your overall web presence. Watch the video and then review our comments at the end of this blog post.

My Comments

Google+ is much more than a personal social networking page, but it does start with the creation of your profile page. You can use Google+ Circles to decide what gets shown to people based on your intimacy level. Keep a Circle for your personal updates and a Circle for business. Choose what works best for you.

You don’t have to put everyone who follows you into a Circle.

Hangouts are audio video group chats. You can connect with up to 10 people where you can see their face and they yours. Hangouts can be recorded public or private. So you can use these as conference seminars.

Google+ posts that are more heavily visited will be pushed to the top of your Google+ stream; allowing popular posts to be seen more frequently.

Google+ allows you to see the impact of your posts using Ripples. Hit play on the left corner to see how your post has been spread on the Web.

The Google +1 button allows you to build a reputation on the Web. In search results you can +1 things you like. You can see what others in your network have liked too. This works on AdWords ads too. When you see friends and connections have liked a product, website, or ad you have the confidence to buy, shop, or view as well.

Google’s key is to return the most relevant search results, Google+ takes into account the number of +1 votes of a page or website in their algorithm.

When you are searching on Google.com, Google integrates Google+ posts, Google+ Circles and those you follow, as well as +1 from connections within your own personal search results.

A Case Study on Using India to Create Your Website

I found this recent situation interesting and wanted to share it with you. A past blogging client told me that his SEO firm advised him that his website had been nailed with the Google Panda update and they could no longer help him. It turns out that when his website was built by a team in India that they simply grabbed content from other websites out on the web and pasted it into his pages.

When I ran CopyScape on a few of his products, I found many sites that had the same content. This kind of situation is not easy to fix. It will require time and money to buy new unique content. Although not every Indian web service firm will do this to you, if you are using an Indian firm learn from this lesson and assure and then verify that the content you have bought will do you good and not harm. The key is to trust but verify!

This client now has a 1,300 page nightmare to fix that may take thousands of dollars to fix the problem. He may be forced into promoting his website only using Google AdWords as there will be no way to ever garner organic placement in this new world of Google.

Placement on Google is based on the criteria that Google decides, you can’t buy it, but you can earn it by not taking short cuts and focusing on unique content and creating value for readers.

What’s Happened to Facebook?

Ask any kid or adult what they think about Facebook and you may hear these comments:

  • I’m tired of the game spam.
  • I am not spending much time on Facebook anymore.
  • I am investing my time in face to face contact and moving offline.
  • I think Facebook is in trouble, I just am not interested in the things happening there anymore.
  • I think Facebook is a fad and has had it’s run its course.
  • My newsfeed is boring.
  • I couldn’t live without Facebook.
  • I only use Facebook to logon to sites I want to become a member on as the auto login is easy.
  • I like using the like button.
  • I like to poke people, play games, use the apps.
  • Many of my friends are leaving Facebook to go to Twitter.
  • I like the games, but I am strongly encouraged to use money to buy things on the games.
  • I find it complicated to use and don’t understand how to use it to connect or answer posts on my wall.

These are just a few comments from the people I polled for this post. Do you have a comment you want to add about Facebook? As for me I think Facebook is still a great place for businesses to be, but only until the next big thing comes along.
