Instant Messaging Acronyms

Have you ever wondered what your kids are saying in their IM sessions or on games chatting with friends with those strange acronyms? Well no need to wonder any more I am going to give you a quick run through of all the acronyms I see most frequently.

  • LoL – laugh out loud
  • WTF –  you might want to look out for this one, if you see it you will want to have a talk with your kids about cursing.
  • ASL – this stands for Age/ Sex/ Location ( if someone is asking this they probably dint know your kid and you shouldn’t let them talk to this person, for safety reasons)
  • ASAP – as soon as possible
  • BRB – be right back
  • BTW – by the way
  • FYI – for your information
  • GTG or G2G – got to go
  • IDC – I don’t care
  • JK – just kidding
  • OMG – oh my God

These are the top ten I see when talking on the Internet to people on games or on AIM (AOL instant messenger) and other instant messenger systems. Just keep your eyes open for your kids using or receiving some of these messages.

  1. What about…

    IMO – In My Opinion

    IDK – I don’t know
    HBU/HBY – How Bout U/You?
    JW – Just Wondering
    JP – Just Playing
    W/E – Whatever
    FTW – For The Win
    FTL – For The Lose
    G2P – Got to pee
    666 – Parents are watching

    WTH – What The Hell?
STFU – Shut The Fuck Up
GTFO – Get The Fuck Out
FOAD – Fuck Off And Die

Really… if you’re so out of touch to actually NEED this list, then there’s a problem. You need to take some time, unbunch your panties, get over whatever issues you may have with modern textual communication, and USE THE TECHNOLOGY!! If you refuse to get in touch with the kinds of applications your kids are using, then you’re never going to understand what’s going on in their lives — you’ll always be two steps behind. You’ll either end up under-worrying and your kid will get raped by some perve, or you’ll end up OVER-WORRYING (really the more likely of the two scenarios). The latter usually results in increasing resentment and loss of trust and respect for the parent followed by a general deterioration of the parent/child relationship.

Get your act together. And just fyi… if you’re going to have a little chat with your child “about curthing” (lisp intentionally added for effect) you need to calm the FUCK down. They’ll probably just do it more, and chances are they probably learned it from you. So chill out, and have a nice day.
